Weightlifting has been a staple of every Pacific Games and Pacific Mini Games sports program since the inception of the Games, except for the Pacific Mini Games in Norfolk Island in 2001. Traditionally, only Athletics draws more entries by country than Weightlifting, which is hugely popular in every corner of the Pacific as it capitalizes on the natural strength of Pacific islands people. Normally around 20 of the 22 member countries will enter the Weightlifting. The Pacific Games Weightlifting competitions are very often a launching pad for the best lifters into the Olympic Games and World Championships where lifters from the Pacific do very well. At present, the strongest Weightlifting nations are Samoa and Papua New Guinea, while Fiji plus Micronesia’s own Nauru and Kiribati are regular winners as well. At the most recent Pacific Games in 2019, 10 of the 22 member countries won medals, as did Australia and New Zealand who were invited in all the weight categories.
